Big Medicine: York Outdoors is a documentary that tells the story of York, the only Black member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Enslaved by Captain William Clark, York’s contributions as a hunter, caretaker, and cultural bridge with Native Nations were so significant that the Arikara people called him Big Medicine. The film retraces parts of his journey along Montana’s Upper Missouri River Breaks, highlighting both his overlooked legacy and the modern importance of representation in outdoor spaces.
